In February I started working at a carwash. About two days into my new job I discovered that more than half the people I work with don’t know how to drive stick. Ever since my managers discovered that I do drive stick, I have been largely responsible for driving manual equipped vehicles around the lot.
So, on to the point of my post. A guy came into our wash with a 996 911(the official Porsche of St. Louis. Seriously, you can throw a rock in any direction and are guaranteed to hit a 996) with a stick. A guy who *sorta* knows how to drive stick pulled the car onto the track, left it in first gear and turned the car off. The dolly on the track carried the car all through the wash while the car was in gear. I pulled the car out of the wash and discovered that it was left in gear the whole ride through. What kind of wear would this have on the engine and gear box?

In first gear... all it probably did was make the engine turn over slowly and likely didn’t do any damage. Now if it was in reverse and it was pulled forward, then something may have broken.

I would think it may be a bit also with a 996 his IMS could be worn and we all know about this IMS bearings

So the car was shut off and carried forward - that is, the wheels were rolling forward? If so, there shouldn’t be any long term damage.

Yep . Turned off. Wheels turning, car still in first gear being pushed through the wash.

Over that short distance, not much. I would tell your coworker, kindly, away from other, what he did and suggest he remember to check to see if it’s in neutral though. If he’s that inexperienced, and if you’re tactful, he will respond positively.

Only damage might be to the dolly pushing against the engine compression. Car is fine

That’s what I thought. There were a few times when I accidentally pushed my 73 Baja Bug around while it was in gear and nothing happened haha but that engine is obviously nothing like the 996 engine.

Oh, those dollies on the track are beasts. Like nothing will stop them. They could tear your foot off at the ankle and keep on keeping on haha

Ya I had a quick talk with him after the fact. Since his little screw up, he’s called me to get cars around for him haha

I had a similar experience at my old workplace, except the carwash was not the ‘get on the tracks’ kind, people kept trying to start the car in gear, and kept soaking spots that were prone to short the electrical system when hosing off the engine bay. Half the guys who worked there had little to no experience driving or with cars, so it was almost always the boss’ job to bring them in.
The awesome part of that job were the parrots the manager had. I even saw him riding his scooter with his macaw (rescued) cruising down the sidewalk on the way to work the other day.

Ain’t as bad as Hong Kong - my immaculate, 15 year old, manual, 45,000 mile Civic is worth less than $400 to a scrapyard. And if you want to learn to drive a manual car in HK, you have to pay an extra $300 compared to an automatic.

Umm, what about automatics? Do you leave them in park? Never been in a carwash like this though.

We actually leave them in neutral and turn the car off. A dolly pops out of the track and carries that car through the wash.
